Treatment for Varicocele

A varicocele is the swelling of the veins inside the scrotum. These veins are found along the cord that holds up a man's spermatic cord. It is similar to varicose veins, but they occur around the testicles rather than the legs. They do not typically cause any serious problems, but they can impact male fertility.

Symptoms of Varicocele

Varicocele is similar to varicose veins, but they occur around the testicles rather than the legs. They don't usually cause any serious problems; however, they can impact male fertility.

If you have a varicocele, you may experience:

Any change in the shape, size, or appearance of the testes

   A lump

   Fertility problems

Veins that show as unusually large or twisted

Chronic dull pain in the testicles

   Pain and Discomfort

   Low Sperm count

Many experts believe a varicocele form when the valves inside the veins in the cord prevent your blood from flowing properly. The resulting backup causes the veins to widen. This might cause damage to the testicle and result in worsened fertility. Varicoceles often form during puberty and it usually occurs on the left side, most likely because of the position of the left testicular vein.

Causes of Varicocele

Varicoceles might enlarge and become more noticeable and it has been described as looking like a bag of worms. The condition might cause a swollen testicle, almost always on the left side. Your spermatic cord carries blood to and from your testicles, and it's not certain what causes varicoceles.

Many experts believe a varicocele form when the valves inside the veins in the cord prevent your blood from flowing properly. The resulting backup causes the veins to widen (dilate) and this can cause damage to the testicle and result in worsened fertility. Varicoceles often form during puberty. It usually occurs on the left side, most likely because of the position of the left testicular vein.

Treatment for Varicocele

If you have a smaller varicocele, our doctor might ask you to stand, take a deep breath and hold it while you bear down. This helps to detect abnormal enlargement of the veins. Varicocele treatment might not be necessary, many men can be a father without any treatment; however, if it causes pain, testicular atrophy or infertility, you need to undergo varicocele repair. The purpose of the surgery is to seal off the affected vein to redirect the blood flow into normal veins. In cases of male infertility, treatment of a varicocele might improve or cure infertility if the technique such as in vitro fertilization is to be used. Clear indications to repair a varicocele in adolescence include progressive testicular atrophy, or abnormal semen analysis results. Although the treatment of a varicocele usually improves sperm characteristics, it is not clear if an untreated varicocele leads to progressive worsening of sperm quality over time.
