Many cases are thought to be caused by too much straining on the toilet, due to prolonged constipation this is often due to a lack of fiber in a person's diet. Chronic (long-term) diarrhea can also make you more vulnerable to getting hemorrhoids.

  Causes of external hemorrhoids include:

   Being overweight or obese

Age as you get older, your body's supporting tissues get weaker, increasing your risk of hemorrhoids

Being pregnant which can place increased pressure on your pelvic blood vessels, causing them to enlarge (read more about common pregnancy problems).

Having a family history of hemorrhoids

   Regularly lifting heavy objects

   Persistent cough or repeated vomiting

   Sitting down for long periods

Who is at Risk for External Piles?

Some of us have had external hemorrhoids, you may be more likely to have them as well and may also be caused by pregnancy. As we age, hemorrhoids will occur due to increased pressure caused by sitting a lot, and anything that causes you to strain during bowel movements will lead to external hemorrhoids. If you’re not sure what the cause of your hemorrhoids may be, a doctor might be able to determine why.
